Reading this from a OnePlus 5 or 5T? Or do you have it right by your side as you read this on your laptop?

Then you should know that OnePlus has released a new open beta update which upgrades the 5 and 5T to Android 8.1 Oreo.

It’s mostly a few little improvements and personal additions by OnePlus on top of the already smooth sailing Android Oreo 8.0.

But there are a few unique features just waiting for the hype train to come by.

1.  Bluetooth Battery Indicator.

Finally, you can see the battery life of your Bluetooth devices when you pair it with your OnePlus 5 or 5T.

Now as long as the headphones or speakers or whatever that you’re connecting supports Hands-Free and GATT profiles (which mostly all devices that use Bluetooth 4.0 LE and higher), you can see the battery life of it in your Quick Settings and also in your Settings under the Bluetooth menu.

2.  Picture-in-Picture with Netflix.

Google did add picture-in-picture mode to Android 8.0 Oreo but Netflix only included the support for this feature for devices running Android 8.1.

Here’s how you can use it:

Step 1:  Open up your Netflix app and then start any video.

Step 2:  Now tap on your home button and the video will continue playing in a small pop-up which you can move around your screen.

3.  A More Zen-like Toast Message.

A toast message is a simple message about an operation in a small popup that appear along the bottom of your screen. Let’s say, if you’re sending a message, once you tap Send you’ll see a toast message that pops up saying “Sending message…“.

In the new Android 8.1 for both the 5 and 5T, these toast messages will now have semi-transparent white backgrounds with black text instead of the old rounded gray backgrounds.

4.  Answer Your Phone Without Touching the Screen.

This is a pretty cool one. You now have a new method of answering calls that you get without ever touching the screen.

While this feature isn’t part of Google’s official update, this is one unique feature OnePlus has added for their own devices with this update.

Here’s how you can enable “Answer calls by gesture” on your OnePlus 5 or 5T:

Step 1:  Jump into your Settings and then tap on Gestures.

Step 2: Over here, choose Answer calls by gesture. Now that you have it enabled, when you receive a call, you can answer it just by simply raising the phone to your ear.

5.  More Brand-New Clocks for Ambient Display.

Your OnePlus 5 or 5T has a gorgeous AMOLED display that includes an Ambient Display feature.

This feature works by turning on a few pixels just to display some important information like the time or who’s called without ever draining your battery.

With this new Beta release, you now have more choices to decide on how the clock is displayed including the choice to use an analog clock.

6.  More Informative Settings for Gestures. (OnePlus 5T only)

It sucks when you don’t know what a setting in your phone does especially when it doesn’t have a description.

OnePlus has made the Navigation bar & gesture options in your Settings more informative of what it actually does, so that you know how to use the gestures. There are even GIFs that further help show you each gesture. 🙂

Other than these new cool little features, the new update also brings with it an updated security patch level and data migration support for OnePlus Switch.
